A holiday in Italy is not always about time spent on the beaches or exploring the culture and history of the country. Sometimes it is all about a winter spent exploring and enjoying a skiing holiday in the process, and the Italian Alps is one such place where you can do so. There are currently numerous hotel deals and an abundance of package holiday offers that are sure to be appealing if this is the type of holiday or vacation you are looking for.
General skiing in Italy
Whether it is the Italian Alps, the Dolomites in the northern region of Italy, or skiing on Sicily’s Mt. Etna, there is a wealth of skiing and winter sports vacations that you can take advantage of when visiting this popular European destination. Furthermore, during the summer months, many Italian ski resorts become great destinations for climbing and hiking. But as far as winter holidays and vacations are concerned, there are a number of resorts that are well worth visiting and enjoying.
Courmayeur Skiing (Monte Bianco or Mont Blanc) – situated opposite Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc) and Chamonix in France is Courmayeur, an excellent skiing venue with fantastic scenery. This traditional village is considered one of Italy’s premier ski resorts.
Italian Dolomites (near the Austrian Border) – bordering Austria, the Dolomites offer the visitor some of the most spectacular mountain scenery you will find anywhere in Italy. There are numerous skiing villages to be found here and the area offers near year-round skiing opportunities.
Ski Cervinia (the Matterhorn or Monte Cervinia) – situated near Zermatt, Switzerland and the Swiss border is the village of Cervinia. Despite the fact that the village is not as charming as what Zermatt is, you can drive to the village whereas vehicles are not allowed in Zermatt. Additionally, you have the benefit of Italian cuisine and it is considerably less expensive.
Ski Piemonte – the home of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games features a number of villages that offer some of the best skiing in northwest Italy. The environment is peaceful and quiet so even the amateur skier will not be intimidated.
Skiing in the Monte Rosa Ski Area
Comparable to the Trois Vallees of France, Monte Rosa offers up three valleys of the best skiing that you will find anywhere in Italy. Monte Rosa is known as the “Pink Mountain” because of the sunrises and sunsets that colour them. There are a number of 4,000 metre peaks that you can ski that are all within a stone’s throw from the Matterhorn of Switzerland.
Although the atmosphere is somewhat upscale here, the area was settled hundreds of years ago by immigrants from Germany and Switzerland, the valleys of Monte Rosa has maintained a cosmopolitan environment. The architecture is more Swiss than what you would expect in an Italian destination and you can still encounter the Germanic language as well. Even though Courmayeur provides all the competition that Monte Rosa can handle, this is still a must-visit skiing venue.
